Facial Oils are starting to line the beauty store shelves… and for good reason. However, many of us are skeptical about using oils on our faces primarily because of the myths surrounding these amazing products.

Here are some of the most common ones.

1. MYTH: Face Oils Clog Our Pores and Cause Breakouts

FACT: Our Skin Needs Healthy Fats and Oils to Prevent Damage and Breakouts

Oil (or sebum) occurs naturally in our skin and our sebaceous glands are constantly working to pump it out. Acne is a result of skin pores getting clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria.

Using topical facial oil will not make this process any worse. In fact, it may help balance and improve acne-prone skin. Oils with high levels of essential fatty acids like linoleic acid are easily absorbed because they resemble the oils naturally found in the skin. If our skin is deficient in linoleic acid, our sebaceous glands work harder and produce a thicker, stickier sebum (oil), which is the true culprit behind clogged pores. Face oils, therefore, may alleviate this problem by providing our skin with the required amount of linoleic acid, thus reducing the need for our sebaceous glands to produce more sebum.

Comedogenic (pore-clogging) oils, like mineral oils or synthetic oils, are also acne culprits. Steer clear of those and use face oils from natural origins with anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties to re-balance the skin. They help keep the skin hydrated and protect its natural barrier from harsh elements.

Tip: For the acne-prone, opt for lightweight options like jojoba, grapeseed, rosehip, argan oil, or squalane. Also, be sure to read the labels and avoid products with added synthetic colours, fragrances, and preservatives.

2. MYTH: Using Face Oils every day Makes Our Skin More Oily

FACT: Our Skin has a Natural Affinity for High-Quality Oils

Our skin’s protective barrier is made partly of oils that aid in preventing it from becoming too sensitive, prematurely aged, and prone to infection. Modern formulations of facial oils are lightweight and easily absorbed by our skin, giving it a dewy finish.

Most importantly, they reduce the need for our sebaceous glands to produce excessive sebum that makes the skin oily in the first place. While regulating our skin’s oil production, they provide hydration and protection without the greasy texture or shine. There is a perfect face oil for every skin type. Make sure to use the right one for yours and apply just the right amount.

3. MYTH: Face Oils are a Passing Fad

FACT: Women Have Been Using Beauty Oils for Centuries

Face oil treatments date back thousands of years. From the beautiful Egyptians, the pleasure-seeking Romans, to Indians who practice Ayurveda, the use of facial oils have long been a part of skincare and anti-ageing beauty routines. The Japanese Geishas’ beauty secret was camellia oil in their skin cleansing ritual just as it was olive oil for the Romans and a variety of oils like sesame and moringa for the Egyptians. Our own Ayurvedic traditions recommend using a variety of plant-based oils for beauty, protection, and nourishment.

4. MYTH: Lotion and Cream Should Go Hand-In-Hand with Face Oil for Better Hydration

FACT: Oils Moisturize and Penetrate Our Skin a Lot Better than Lotions or Creams

It is their oil-based ingredients that make lotions and creams moisturizing. Oils are lipophilic (fat-loving). They penetrate the lipid layer of our skin much better than moisturizers (which are a combination of water and oil).

It is perfectly alright to replace our lotions and creams with all-natural face oils. They not only lock in moisture but also nourish our skin. If you are looking to simplify your multi-step skincare regime, using face oils is the way to go.

5. MYTH: Facial Oils are Not Effective Anti-Ageing Products

FACT: Facial Oils are Anti-Ageing Powerhouse

Leaving skin dry and dehydrated is the surest way to wrinkles. Unadulterated botanical face oils are replete with antioxidants, vitamins, and active ingredients that slow down ageing, neutralize free radicals, and calm inflammation while keeping the skin hydrated and protected.

6. MYTH: All Face Oils are the Same

FACT: Not All Oils Are Created Equal

As a conscious consumer, it is important to read the product labels. Watch out for ingredients such as synthetic oils, artificial fillers & additives, and synthetic fragrances. Avoid these at all costs as they may clog your pores and irritate your skin. All-natural plant-based face oils are your safest bet. These are safely absorbed by the skin and reduce inflammation and irritation.
